Property of the week: The Suspension Bridge
Tuesday, 7 February 2012 11:25 AM
An island paradise sounds great. However, it might be time for a rethink. The commute would be a disaster. Boats, planes, all sorts. It'd take forever to get to work wouldn't it?
Luckily there's a solution. Build your own suspension bridge from your island home to the mainland.
Our property of the week is a three bedroom house on Towan Island, Newquay, and it features Britain's only privately owned suspension bridge.
Current owners Lord and Lady Long have put their remarkable home on the market with an asking price of just under £1m.
Included in that is a 100ft Edwardian bridge, suspended 90ft off the ground:
Built in 1901 the bridge is older than the house, which dates back to the 1930s. Originally there was a tea room on the island, but this made way for what is now one of Britain's most iconic properties.
Mind you, it's still a decent spot for a cup of tea, especially with views like this:
The views are 360 degrees, mainly as the house is perched atop a huge granite rock:
When the tide is in, the island is completely surrounded by water (else it wouldn't be an island would it). Unfortunately we don't have any pictures of that, but it sounds pretty brilliant. You'd notice if there was a storm.
The interior decor certainly befits a Lord and Lady, with a lounge made for conversation and the finer things in life. Not a TV in sight. Where do they watch Take Me Out you ask? Perhaps they iPlayer it.
A sunny day on Towan Island must be quite an experience with the panoramic views. Luckily for us the estate agents have chosen such a day to take their pictures on! Fancy that.
The dining room has real regal class to it, in fitting with the rest of the home. Having brought your dinner party guests across a suspension bridge, shown them the views and then sat them down in here you could serve ASDA value ready meals and you'd still have a decent chance of winning Come Dine With Me.
Not that you'd need to serve up anything from the microwave of course, we absolutely love this modern kitchen space:
Newquay is of course famous for surfing and whilst we'd hazard a guess that Lord and Lady Long don't get too involved in this anymore, there's definitely some potential to turn this home into a surfer's paradise.
If it's not the waves you're after, then you could always just go for a wander along the beach:
Anyway. We've gone off the point really haven't we? The real star of the show is the suspension bridge:
Just how brilliant is that? We want it.
