Turning winter into a good time to sell
Thursday, 19 January 2012 11:48 AM
Selling your home in winter can be more worthwhile than you think, according to the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA).
Conventional wisdom says it is better to hold off until the Spring but the NAEA says there are good reasons to buy and sell now (nothing to do with helping out its hard-pressed members of course).
While the number of active buyers tends to fall during the winter months, the NAEA says that in the current economic climate the number of sales agreed remains fairly constant throughout the year.
NAEA president Wendy Evans said: "For those willing to brave the chill, the winter market can also bring a greater sense of commitment from both sides to complete the sale, as people tend to make life changing decisions in the New Year."
The NAEA's top tips for selling in winter are:
Make first impressions count – spruce up your front garden by painting any weather-beaten walls and replacing any frost-bitten plants.
Run an open house – it may attract committed buyers who will be grateful for a hot drink and piece of cake.
Keep your house warm – plus allow time for it to warm up before a viewing.
Check your lighting – a well-lit home is even more important to show it off at its best.
