New Facebook property portal launches

A new property portal is set to give Facebook users the chance to buy, sell or rent a property via the social networking site for the first time.
Property Place, a new application on Facebook, already has almost 400,000 properties for sale and to rent across the UK.
Sohail Rashid, the Yorkshire based entrepreneur behind the project, says social media can be "the future" of buying and selling property.
The former conveyance lawyer sees a huge marketing benefit in the nature of the app, which he says takes into account the "viral and visual" nature of property sales.
Users will be given the chance to share properties and create a "my properties folder" which they can share with other Facebook users.
This will allow users to interact and comment on properties, which Rashid says offers a more "consumer controlled market" then current property portals do.
"Property Place makes it easier for consumers to share the decision making process with trusted friends and family on one platform," he added.
The price of the service is £50 per month for agents to list up to 15 properties, or £150 for 150 properties.
Private sellers will be charged an entry fee of £75, dependent on them providing property photos.
Rashid was motivated to set up the service following the Office of Fair Trading report in February 2010 which called for more "innovation, competition and transparency" in the UK property market.
The project has been 18 months in development and Rashid's team includes Guardian Media Group Property Services (GMGPS).
Mark Goddard, group managing director of GMGPS, said: "It is our belief that selling agents should treat social media as an emerging market and a new opportunity to challenge the way properties are currently sold and let.
"The application offers so much more to consumers and agents over and above traditional portals."
