Property of the week: Bohemia in Wells
Monday, 5 December 2011 5:31 PM
A house is what you make of it. You can have the loveliest exterior ever, but that is not what you see when you wander downstairs on a Sunday morning to make a cup of tea.
Interiors are the bit of a house where you can bare your soul.
We're not sure who lived in our property of the week... but they certainly did a bit of soul baring.
And visited vintage shops.
Walking around the centre of Wells (Fun Wells Fact: It's a cathedral city), you'd most likely wander past this four bedroom semi-detached house without ever really suspecting what's inside:
However, it is when you rock up for a viewing that you might be a little taken aback.
Kitted out in a full bohemian interior, this place screams "individual".
To save your eyes we'll start off with one of the least crazy rooms:
Notice the floor space and the fact there are only three mirrors. Such restraint is not a feature of the rest of the house.
The lounge is a veritable feast of bohemian wonderment:
It really is a bit Where's Wally, so see if you can spot the following things:
1. Four mirrors.
2. Grey gas heater/Dalek
3. Wise words (if you can't quite make them out, they read - "I've learnt so much from my mistakes I think I'll make another").
You'll notice that the sofas have a soft red about them, although they don't stand out as the room is... quite busy.
That red theme is continued in the dining room:
We like the effort the photographer has taken to avoid being shown in a mirror.
This house would be frankly odd if it didn't have some sort of musical nod, which the study happily provides:
That's an impressive gramophone. Also, notice another perk of this style of interior design; you never have to put books away.
The kitchen is also a bit musical, check out the records on the cupboard doors:
Glastonbury is just down the road from Wells, so you'd have an easy commute if you didn't fancy sleeping in a tent. Another totally out of place Fun Wells Fact for you is that the movie Hot Fuzz by Simon Pegg was filmed there. So, now you know.
The first bedroom sports three mirrors and an impressive collection of bears. It's all gone Where's Wally again, so have a look if you can find all six.
Cash in the Attic would have a great time here, although it might require a whole season rather than just the one episode.
When you go for a white and black colour scheme in a room, you do have to be a bit careful of what you put in that room. Brown bears are a no go, but pandas on the other hand are very welcome:
This would be a great room to play chess in.
Bathrooms tend to have a bath, a shower, a loo, a couple of oddly placed pillars and a mirror:
Surprisingly there appears to be only three mirrors in here (artfully hidden) placing the bathroom in the mid-to-low range in terms of household mirror coverage.
Now it would be absolutely fabulous if the person who'd put together the houses' interior also went for a neat and tidy lawn out back. We're thinking bowling green, with a lovely clipped privet hedge.
Alas, that is not quite the case:
There's also a fair bit of greenery and an extremely well placed bench, which actually maximises the space rather well:
From a position of initial uncertainty, we've rather fallen in love with this house here at AboutProperty. There's just something about it. If you fancy buying, it's available for about £255,000.
We've also enjoyed giving you Fun Wells Facts and wish to end on one, so here you go:
Wells is the smallest City in England, if you discount the City of London.
You learn something new about Wells every day.
