The UK is the most expensive country in Western Europe for flatsharers, according to a survey by Easyroommate.co.uk.
The website says our average rents of £360 a month are five per cent higher than in France, the second most expensive country, 22 per cent higher than Italy and 56 per cent higher than in Spain.
London is unsurprisingly the priciest city at £520 a month, ahead of Paris, Milan, Nice and Rome.
However, Glasgow (6th most expensive) and Birmingham (9th) are more expensive than Madrid and Leeds (12th) and Liverpool (13th) are more expensive than Barcelona.
And despite higher pay the UK is also the most expensive country in relation to earnings. Flatsharers here are paying an average of 15 per cent of their gross salary in rents, compared to 14 per cent in France and Italy and 12 per cent in Spain.
Jonathan Moore, director of Easyroommate.co.uk, said: "Flatsharers in the UK face much higher bills at the end of the month than their European counterparts.
"The combination of unaffordably high house prices with the ongoing lending crunch in the UK is leaving hundreds of thousands of frustrated buyers dependent on rental accommodation."
