Government pledges housing help for heroes

Housing minister Grant Shapps has set out plans to help service men and women get help with their housing.
Speaking ahead of Remembrance Sunday, he said that military work was too often a block on the aspirations of members of the armed forces to a secure and stable home.
And he pledged to do everything he could to help whether they were buying a home or applying for social housing.
The package of housing help for heroes includes:
- Putting service men and women at the front of the queue for government home ownership schemes like FirstBuy.
- Visits by housing experts to military bases to explain how they can apply for new homes.
- Giving councils a duty to put them at the top of the social housing waiting list.
- Help with home adaptations for those returning wounded from active service.
- Homelessness support to help in the transition to civilian life.
Grant Shapps said: "Our brave men and women in uniform aren't looking for sympathy and handouts, but all too often their selfless sacrifice for this country can become a major blockade on the road to a home of their own.”
