Since well before Elizabeth I there has been a lighthouse gazing out across the Irish Sea at St Ann's Head on the Pembrokeshire coastline.
Back in the sixteenth century it was probably just a chapel with a coal-fired brazier, which would have been attended by a monk or hermit.
Now it's on the market for £1.25 million and comes equipped with a swimming pool.
The views are simply stunning, particularly in the 360 degree observation lounge, which overlooks the headland, estuary entrance and the islands of Skomer and Skokholm.
Imagine sitting back with a glass of champagne, enjoying panoramic uninterrupted views of the sun rising and setting:
At the moment the lighthouse is being used as two holiday letting homes, but it can also be utilised as a five bedroom property, combining the comfortable living space downstairs with the spiralling nature of the tower and the beautiful sea views afforded in its lofty bedroom.
If you want to live here there's a decent chance you'll be a fan of the sea and so the property's maritime features will appeal. "Ahoy matey" and all that. Cheesy, but we challenge anyone not to be a little bit charmed by this:
One consideration is that the lighthouse sits on the very edge of a cliff face (it wouldn't be much good on a ring-road outside Birmingham).
That obviously affects how child friendly the property is, although there is a rather brilliant pool which is a great feature for the kids.
The tower dates back to the 17th century and it is now sporting an imposing black and white look, making it really stand out against the greens and blues which surround it.
However this is how it used to look (disclaimer – picture is unlikely to be from the 17th century):
If you want to continue the maritime tradition down on the Welsh coast and have a spare £1.25 million to spend then this property might be for you.
AboutProperty can't quite afford it (even though it would make us a much more exciting office), but we do like the pictures:
