The stress of buying or selling a home ages you by two years and can make you lose your hair, according to a new survey.
Psychologists working for online conveyancing firm In-Deed interviewed 300 people who have bought or sold a house in the last three months and 68 per cent said it had accelerated the symptoms of ageing.
They complained about hair loss (10 per cent), short-term memory failure (14 per cent) and a diminished sex drive (19 per cent).
The study asked them how much older they felt by the end of the process. Stressed people said they felt 25 months older by the end of the typical 15-week house-buying period. But the ageing effect for the most stressed buyers increased to 47 months.
People said house buying or selling was more stressful than family arguments or job interviews and reported side effects like sleeplessness and even physical illness.
And buying a property caused disputes between 41 per cent of calls, which was nearly as divisive as arguments about money (58 per cent) and housework (47 per cent).
Study leader, psychologist Dr Glenn Wilson, said: “Periods of prolonged stress and anxiety – such as when buying or selling a home – can seriously take their toll on our wellbeing, with depression, weight loss and even premature ageing a likely outcome.”
Property expert Phil Spencer explains the often stressful legal side of buying or selling a home:
