The supply of new affordable homes in England rose to its highest level for 15 years in 2010/11, according to figures released by the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG).
A total of 60,630 additional affordable homes were supplied over the year, an increase of 5 per cent on 2009/10 and the highest number since 1995/96.
Within that total, the number of new properties available for social rented homes was up 18 per cent at 39,170.
And 21,460 homes were provided through intermediate housing schemes, including shared ownership, shared equity and intermediate rent. That was down 13 per cent on 2009/10.
About half of the additional affordable homes were provided in London, the South East and South West. Yorkshire and the Humber saw the biggest regional increase.
Housing minister Grant Shapps said: "Reviving a housebuilding market that was brought to its knees takes time, so I am encouraged by today's figures which show the highest number of additional affordable homes being delivered over the past year since the mid-1990s.
"Our efforts to get Britain building again are continuing, with a £4.5 billion affordable homes programme set to exceed expectations and deliver up to 170,000 new homes over the next four years."
