Landlords keen to take up Green Deal

Two thirds of private landlords would consider taking advantage of the government’s Green Deal to improve the energy efficiency of their homes, according to a survey by the National Landlords Association.
Legislation introducing the deal is going through its final stages in the House of Commons this week and it is likely to be available to property owners from October 2012.
The Green Deal will offer loans to landlords as well as home owners to make energy efficiency improvements such as loft and wall insulation. The loans will be repaid through utility bills but these will be lower thanks to energy savings.
The NLA survey found 24 per cent of landlords would definitely take part and 38 per cent would consider it. Another 21 per cent are unsure and 17 per cent are not interested.
Their main reasons for considering it are to reduce energy consumption and bills for tenants, add value to their property and become more eco friendly.
NLA chairman David Salusbury said: “It’s pleasing to see that two-thirds of landlords are considering using the Green Deal to improve their properties when grants become available next year, but the actual cost of these improvements will be a key factor.”
