Boris clears Croydon tower for take-off

Construction work can start on the tallest residential building in the UK after London mayor Boris Johnson decided not to object.
The 55-storey, £250 million development in Croydon, south London, will provide more than 420 homes as well as a 165-room hotel, offices and shops.
The site, which is on Cherry Orchard Road, will offer affordable housing and shared ownership opportunities as well as private properties.
It will also include a new entrance to East Croydon train station, which is due for completion in 2014.
Croydon council’s strategic committee approved plans for the tower last month but because the development is so large the mayor could have intervened. His decision not to call in the planning application means the developer, Menta, can start work, despite some local opposition to the project.
Make's Cara Bamford, who designed the scheme, said: “The building will host a genuine ‘vertical community’ with shared amenity spaces at all levels including roof gardens, games room, craft room and business centre, and rooms available for private hire for family celebrations and other events.”
