Warning: smoking can seriously damage your wealth

Britain’s anti-smoking culture is having a huge impact on the sale and rental of homes across the country.
Research by property portal Globrix.com found that more than 80 per cent of people support the smoking ban in public places introduced five years ago – and times are changing in the property market too.
The study found that 24 per cent of buyers expect a discount on the property price if there is evidence of a smoker previously living there. Another eight per cent would not buy the property at all.
Meanwhile, 40 per cent of renters said they would think twice about renting a property lived in by a smoker.
And there is bad news for smokers looking for a place to rent: 60 per cent of landlords said they would not consider letting a property to smoking tenants and 50 per cent said they would increase the rent.
A third of landlords said they had held back deposit money to cover extra cleaning costs caused by smoking.
Jennifer Warner from Globrix.com said: "It is no surprise that in today’s ultra-competitive rental market, landlords are coming down hard on smokers, penalising them with higher rental charges and in many cases refusing to let properties to smokers at all."
