Almost two million young women are looking to buy their first property in the coming months, according to new research revealed today.
A study from Post Office Mortgages found that 1.8 million young women aged between 18 and 34 in the UK are looking to buy a property in the immediate future.
More young women are looking to get onto the housing ladder than their male counterparts (28 per cent versus 20 per cent), the research said.
Female buyers are, on average, a year younger than male homebuyers, the study said.
The research also unearthed significant regional differences across the UK: women buying in Sunderland are, on average, nine years younger than men buying, seven years younger in Hereford and six years younger in Slough and Leicester.
Over a third (37 per cent) of young women said they were happy to forego being in a trendy area. However, security was the factor women were least likely to compromise on - just 17 per cent say they would settle for an area they don’t feel as safe in.
Men were more willing to sacrifice outside space and being in a family area than women (31 per cent versus 24 per cent of women).
Meanwhile, 31 per cent of women said they were happier to compromise on proximity to a city or city centre, where as only 23 per cent of men were willing to make that sacrifice.
