Shapps proposes changes to leaseholder laws
Tuesday, 14 June 2011 1:17 PM
Grant Shapps today published a consultation paper proposing that the property value limit on certain leaseholder rights should be increased.
The housing minister's paper surrounds leaseholders' right to remain in their home as assured tenants when the lease comes to an end, to extend the lease or to buy the freehold of the property.
This right currently applies to tenants living in homes with a certain value limit, which was last updated in April 1990. Shapps has proposed that the value be adjusted "so that these rights are not taken away from residential long leaseholders through the effects of property price inflation".
The minister added that the submission of the consultation paper is part of the Department for Communities and Local Government's wider aim to maintain the balance between freeholder and leaseholder rights.
The paper will be online for 12 weeks until September 12th 2011 and Grant Shapps has said that he is hoping to learn the opinions of a wide range of organisations and individuals.
