Businesses to decide on planning with residents

The government has announced the eight frontrunners in a scheme that will give businesses a stronger voice in the planning system.
The eight Business Neighbourhood Vanguards will be areas where businesses will work with residents and the local authority to draw up a future for their area.
The announcement follows an amendment to the Localism Bill this week that opens up membership of Neighbourhood Forums – local groups with the power to draw up planning documents for their community – to companies with links to the area. That will allow firms to draw up development plans for approval by the local authority in predominately commercial areas like high streets and business parks.
The eight vanguards will comprise five nominated by the British Property Federation (BPF) – Milton Keynes Central, Bankside, South Bank and Waterloo, the West End in London and Aldershot Urban Extension – and three by the British Chambers of Commerce: Trafford Park in Manchester, Innovation Park in Liverpool and Team Valley Trading Estate in Gateshead.
Speaking at an event organised by the BPF, decentralisation minister Greg Clark said: “We need to involve local companies more explicitly in neighbourhood planning decisions for business areas if communities are to get the most out of them.
“Businesses have access to skills, resources and expertise that can give a real boost to getting the right kind of growth underway in many areas. Business Neighbourhood Frontrunners are about residents and businesses shaping their neighbourhood together.”
