Which towns have the most properties for sale?

Research released today by FindAProperty.com has revealed that Torquay has a higher proportion of properties for sale than any other town in England and Wales.

One in 17 homes is currently on the market in the seaside Devonshire town, and Truro in Cornwall and Swansea in Wales follow closely with one in 18 and one in 19 properties for sale respectively.

The Cheshire town of Chester is the most difficult place for buyers, as only one in 71 properties is on the market – that's just 1.4 per cent of the town's housing stock.

Regionally speaking, London leads the way with one in 23 properties for sale, while the North-west lags behind with only one in every 41 homes being on the market.

Nigel Lewis, property analyst at FindAProperty.com, pointed out that there can be several factors behind the number of properties for sale within a town; having a high proportion of homes on the market is not necessarily a good or a bad sign.

"In London, for example, the market moves very quickly because demand is high and properties change hands quite frequently," he said.

"Here, the large proportion of for-sale homes is a symptom of a healthy property market and this is also likely to be the case for Truro – a thriving commuter town where property price inflation has been particularly high in recent years.

"In areas like Torquay however, where unemployment is widespread and an above-average proportion of the population is elderly, this may be a sign that the property market is struggling."
