Campaign to save affordable housing in Newcastle

A campaign has been launched by the National Landlords Association (NLA) against controversial regulations planned for Newcastle, which experts fear could limit the amount of affordable housing available in the city.
Newcastle City Council has proposed a set of restrictions that would require planning permission for all new homes shared by three or more people, which some have claimed would make it extremely difficult for landlords to offer the properties for rent.
The NLA has warned that the regulations will have a "devastating effect" on the amount of shared accommodation available in the Newcastle area and lead to a decline in the supply of quality affordable housing.
It has called on landlords and tenants in the city to join its campaign to oppose the plans, by sending an e-letter to their local MP through the NLA website.
David Salusbury, the group's chairman, commented: "Like many other cities across the country, Newcastle has a lack of good-quality affordable housing. These latest proposals by the City Council will only reduce supply still further.
"Many young professionals struggling to get on the property ladder, students at Newcastle's universities and people on low incomes rely on rented accommodation. These proposed changes will make it harder for them to find a home."
The NLA meeting will be held at the Newcastle Civic Centre at 2pm on Monday February 28. Representatives from the Newcastle City Council will be available to take questions.
Supporters can join the NLA campaign and send an e-letter to their local MP by visiting Landlords.org.uk.
