Average house prices in the north of Scotland ended last year slightly higher than in the final quarter of 2009, according to new research by the Highlands Solicitors Property Centre (HSPC).
The figures show that a typical Highlands home cost £170,004 in the three months leading to December 2010 – up two per cent, or £2,851, from the previous year.
In contrast, Halifax has reported that house prices fell across the UK by an average of 1.6 per cent during 2010, dropping by 1.3 per cent in December alone.
Nationwide's latest report was slightly more positive, showing typical asking prices to have remained largely static in the past 12 months.
The HSPC figures peg the average price of a Highlands flat at £109,875 in December, while bungalows came in at £178,833 and villa houses at £255,509.
Sarah Woodcock, manager at the firm, commented: "The market fluctuated noticeably during the past year, reacting to the changing economic and political news.
"We saw that most clearly with a drop in sales during July, reflecting a loss of confidence in the wake of the coalition Government's Emergency Budget. True to form, however, house sales bounced back strongly in August," she added.
