A vacant and redundant hospital site at Harold Wood, in the north-west London borough of Havering, is to be redeveloped by Countryside Properties, providing 810 new homes.
Outline planning consent was granted by the local authority and subsequently approved by the mayor's office, with major redevelopment work now set to go ahead on the project, which adjoins Harold Wood railway station.
The regeneration will incorporate a new public open space and funding for community health facilities and transport.
Also included are plans for the refurbishment of The Grange, a Grade-II listed building within the site that will be transformed into 15 homes.
Tony Travers, subsidiary managing director at Countryside Properties, said: "This area has been crying out for more housing and we have had enquiries from prospective purchasers since we first submitted our plans for the project.
"The development will provide a cohesive and architecturally valuable addition to Harold Wood. It is our intention to create a new community that will regenerate the site to the benefit of local and new residents," he added.
Most of the site will comprise family accommodation, with a minimum of 15 per cent affordable housing for rent and shared ownership.
