Action needed against 'rogue landlords'

Homeless charity Shelter has released new research suggesting that too many landlords are abusing their positions by providing substandard levels of repair or in some cases illegally evicting tenants.
Shelter's survey of 184 environmental health officers (EHOs) revealed that almost all have encountered landlords who persistently ignore their responsibilities, with many saying unsafe properties are let out to make as much money as possible.
In one case, a mother and her young child were found to be living with no kitchen facilities or fire precautions and only a halogen heater for warmth.
"Government needs to wake up to the reality of the problem and work with councils to develop a tough programme of action to root out rogue landlords," said Campbell Robb, chief executive of Shelter.
"The minority who do break the rules should be prosecuted and struck off immediately."
Shelter recently predicted that nearly 54,000 children living below the poverty line are set to suffer further from government cuts to housing benefit.
