Lending conditions for first-time buyers have not drastically improved, but they are beginning to move in the right direction, an advice site has said.
John Charcol reported this week that the proportion of people applying for mortgages for the first time increased by 80 per cent in July, the highest level since February this year.
The proportion of mortgages for purchases also broke the 60 per cent barrier last month for the first time in decades.
Helen Adams, managing director of FirstRungNow.com, said the scale of the increase is surprising, although lenders are starting to give a little more money more regularly.
However, she noted that mortgage providers are still charging "quite a lot" for their services.
"Property prices are levelling out at the moment and that makes property slightly more accessible," she went on to say.
"Lenders seem to be lending slightly more readily and I would like to think that this trend will continue for at least a few months."
The Daily Telegraph has published figures appearing to show that first-time buyers are getting a raw deal, but MyMortgageDirect says this is not the case.
