Conwy recorded the biggest increase in house prices among UK counties over the past year, according to new research from Halifax.
In its latest survey, the lender revealed that average residential properties in the quaint county borough of North Wales had jumped by 13 per cent in 2010, to £162,691.
After Conwy, it was the Scottish regions of East Dunbartonshire - with a 12 per cent annual growth - and Dumfries, which saw house prices jump by more than ten per cent, that enjoyed the biggest increases.
Meanwhile, Britain's most expensive county was found to be Surrey, with an average asking price of £296,344, while 13 other regions recorded typical values in excess of £200,000.
Suren Thiru, housing economist at Halifax, said: "Many of the counties recording the best house price performance in 2010 are in the south of England, reflecting the general outperformance of the housing market in this part of the country.
"Looking forward, we predict that UK house prices at the end of 2011 will be at a broadly similar level to that at the end of 2010. We do, however, expect some modest variations in house price performance across the country."
He concluded: "Prices are expected to be strongest in southern England as this part of the country is likely to fare better economically."
