Beauty products cause £1.4bn a year in home damage

Household damage caused by beauty products has cost British homeowners more than £1 billion in the past 12 months and is set to increase further over the Christmas party season, according to new research.
Findings from Halifax Home Insurance have revealed that stains and burns from makeup, hair and beauty products have cost UK property owners almost £1.4 billion this year – and the figure is set to soar by a further £115 million during the festive period.
Makeup, fake tan and nail varnish spills are among the most frequent mishaps, while burns caused by hair straighteners are also common. It is also estimated that £330 million worth of damage results from stiletto heels wrecking floors.
Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager for Halifax Home Insurance, suggested that these kinds of accidents are often the result of alcohol consumption at home, such as among friends during getting-ready-to-go-out parties.
"The rise in popularity of drinking at home before going out has significantly increased the likelihood of home accidents, so while many will stay home to try and save money, it may prove to be a false economy if careless behaviour ends up costing them more," he said.
Foulds urged homeowners to check their insurance policy to ensure that these kinds of incidents are covered.
"Accidental damage to some parts of the home, such as sinks, baths and ceramic hobs, is included in most home insurance policies, but it is worth considering additional accidental damage cover to protect against common household mishaps such as carpet spillages and damaged furniture," he concluded.
