British house buyers are prepared to pay as much as £30,000 extra for a property in one of England's traditional market towns, new research has revealed.
According to a Lloyds TSB survey, a typical market town property costs around £230,000 – roughly 14 per cent more than the nationwide average.
Researchers noted it costs more to buy a house in the majority of market towns, with Beaconsfield, in Buckinghamshire, commanding the highest premium, costing 145 per cent more than properties across the region as a whole.
"Market towns are often particularly attractive to those looking to move into more idyllic surroundings without sacrificing many of the important amenities they currently enjoy," explained Martin Ellis, housing economist at Lloyds TSB.
The average Beaconsfield home is currently priced at more than £735,000, while a house in the second-most expensive market town of Winchcombe, in Gloucestershire, will cost buyers over £360,000.
At the other end of the spectrum, Ferryhill in Durham was found to be the cheapest market town, with average prices of less than £99,000.
Only ten market towns have average house prices of less than £150,000, with three of these in Durham, while two are located in Lincolnshire.
