London housing proposals welcomed

People buying property in London have been told that boroughs in the capital will be given greater control of housing budgets in future.
Mayor Boris Johnson said yesterday (August 12th) that local authorities should be empowered to make decisions within the communities they affect, after releasing a report entitled A Framework for Devolved Delivery.
The news was welcomed by the National Housing Federation (NHF), which represents 1,300 independent, not-for-profit housing associations in England.
"Any initiative which leads to the building of more affordable housing is to be welcome," said Dino Patel, London regional manager at the NHF.
"Our members are willing to work with local authorities and the GLA [Greater London Authority] at a local level to deliver this."
It follows the announcement this month from housing minister Grant Shapps that local communities that build more homes will be rewarded with increased funding to spend on council tax discounts for residents or play facilities.
