The first Budget from chancellor George Osborne is a good opportunity to boost the housing market, it has been claimed.
The National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) has called for Mr Osborne to commit to a long-term review of Stamp Duty, ensure that residential property lending criteria are sensible and responsible and introduce fiscal incentives for first-time buyers to make a property purchase.
Commenting ahead of today's announcement (June 22nd), NAEA chief executive Peter Bolton King welcomed the government's existing efforts to tackle Stamp Duty issues by raising the threshold to £250,000.
However, he added: "Now is the time to go further and review the fundamental inequalities at the heart of this tax."
Mr King also underlined the need for responsible lending. "Responsible lending criteria is essential in a healthy, functioning housing market. We do not condone irresponsible lending," he explained.
His comments accompany calls from the Intermediary Mortgages Lenders Association for Mr Osborne to clarify what action will be taken to tackle the mortgage funding shortage in the UK.
