Green homes sector 'set to go large scale'

Support for homeowners making environmental improvements to their houses is set to move to a much larger scale, according to an industry expert.
The demand for retrofitting work and general improvements to reduce fuel bills and carbon emissions "can be a major enterprise", claims Manchester City Council executive member for the environment Nigel Murphy.
Speaking at the Greenbuild Expo in Manchester earlier this week, he underlined the "bold and ambitious" opportunities his local authority is keen to take advantage of emerging from the recession.
He explained: "It will save money and create new jobs, as well as reducing CO2."
However, he admitted that this is likely to be a challenging undertaking given the current economic climate.
Manchester City Council outlined its ambitious green building housing plans in November 2009's Manchester: A Certain Future paper, which included proposals to develop a range of example commercial, domestic and public buildings by 2050 and helping large organisations to achieve zero waste to landfill targets.
