John Lewis sees huge increase in homeware sales as movers stay put

John Lewis has today said its sales of curtains, cushions and home accessories have "significantly increased", suggesting potential home movers are following the 'improve not move' trend.
Sales figures for candles and home fragrances are up 70 per cent year on year, with fabric flowers up 80 per cent. Amazingly, sales for handmade rugs were up 689 per cent year on year.
In response to the sales increase, John Lewis has launched a home economics consultation service, which they say will help 'frustrated movers' create their ideal home.
Kate Leach, chief furnishing advisor at John Lewis, said: "Not being able to move house can impact on the whole family emotionally.
"So far this year we've seen a lot of customers investing in vibrant throws and cushions."
John Lewis's own brand plain textured wallpaper has sold 20 per cent better than last year, with wall clocks up 9.5 per cent.
A leading psychologist has told John Lewis how important it is for frustrated movers to make these alterations to their homes. Professor Ben Fletcher, head of psychology at the University of Hertfordshire and an expert on stress and health, explained: "The frustration and stress of not being able to move can lead to low mood and anxiety. This could be termed M.A.D. or Moving Adjournment Disorder.
"It is attributable to the fact that people's hopes are dashed; they believe they are being held back from climbing the property ladder and providing the best for their family.
"By making these positive changes people can ensure their home is in the best possible position when the market picks up."
Ms Leach offers the following advice for anyone thinking of making home improvements:
Create zones within your house so that each area has a function and is used appropriately. This will help you make the space in your house work better for you.
Set yourself a realistic budget and make sure you stick to it.
Instead of throwing away dated furniture, invest in a re-upholstery service to rejuvenate old treasures
Invest in good quality free-standing furniture that can accompany you when you do eventually move on. Splashing out a little more upfront will provide better value in the long run, as you can reuse rather than replace.
Use a series of photo frames on the wall to create a focal 'happiness hub' featuring family and friends.
