Halifax says householders feel greater threat of burglary

Halifax Home Insurance has released research today which found householders feel more at risk of burglary since the economic downturn hit.
But Halifax have said despite their research, and the Home Office report which found burglaries had increased last year, homeowners are still failing to protect their valuables properly.
The research from the home insurer found one in seven householders feel a greater threat of burglary than ever before, and nearly a quarter had been a victim of burglary at some time in their lives.
Senior claims manager Martyn Foulds said: "It is surprising to see that so many people are effectively advertising their valuables to thieves by leaving them visible through windows, and the fact that many are leaving windows and doors unlocked means it can be all too tempting for burglars to reach in and grab whatever they can.
"We'd recommend householders take a few moments before they leave the house, and before going to bed, to make sure valuables are out of sight."
Over the past five years, Halifax Home Insurance has received over 44,000 claims for burglary totalling more than £82 million to replace stolen items and repair damaged homes.
According to Halifax claims data, 29 per cent of burglary claims last year were for unforced burglary; through open or unlocked windows and doors. Halifax warns "householders are making it too easy for opportunist thieves to get their hands on small items of value such as handbags, car keys, MP3 players and mobile phones".
