Sex in the City? Head to Camden

Thursday, 22 May 2008 4:12 PM

Leading estate agent Hamptons International has recommended those looking for love in the capital move to Camden Town.

Long a favourite of the capital's alternative scene, the borough - home to such venues as the Koko, Barfly and Roundhouse as well as a host of exemplary bars - is noted for its "large population of single men and women" by the property organisation.

Property prices start at around £611 per square foot (PSF) - with the added bonus of a potential encounter with Amy Winehouse, a local resident.

The advice is part of a wider study from Hamptons, examining which areas of London are suitable for which buyers.

For example, couples with young children could do worse than to investigate properties for sale in the areas of Chiswick (W4) or Hampstead (NW3), where prices sit at an average of £609 PSF and £814 PSF respectively.

"Chiswick offers riverside living, open greens and good space for children," notes Hamptons, while "Hampstead maintains an 'exclusive neighbourhood' tag, yet also offers a park and open areas for children to grow up and run around in."

Young professionals should focus their attention on Clapham (SW4), according to the estate agents.

The area, a favourite with aspiring City-types, continues to sit at an average of price of £559 PSF - making it both relatively affordable and somewhere with excellent return on investment potential.

In addition, the area also boasts a wealth of restaurants and bars, as well as providing locals with a green and spacious location - the perfect mix for any young professional.

For those already on the property ladder and looking to trade up, the Southbank (SE1) offers some of the best investment opportunities.

Research from Hamptons finds prices average out at around £708 PSF, for City pied-a-terre buyers)

The demographic may also find something in Belgravia/Knightsbridge (SW1/SW3), where prices run from £1,018 PSF.

These areas are particularly popular with second-time buyers, as they are exclusive and centrally located.

Finally, for first-time buyers, who are able to secure lending, the best location to buy is south London - specifically around West Norwood, Crystal Palace or Brixton (SE27/SE19/SW2).

Property is currently available from £355 PSF south of the river.
