Planning key to moving abroad

The level of planning and preparation before embarking on a journey is key to a successful move abroad, according to a new report released today by Abbey International.
An average 400,000 people, of all nationalities, leave the UK to live abroad every year, according to the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR).
However, 91,000 people returned to the country in 2005 for example.
In response Abbey has examined the level and depth of preparation necessary in order to move abroad effectively and identified several key areas:
Health
Planning to move a whole family abroad can take several months. Well in advance dental and medical check-ups should be sought, along with advice with regard to immunisations and reciprocal international agreements for healthcare between European Economic Area (EEA) countries.
Enquiries should also be made to ensure sufficient insurance is in place, either from a private policy or through an employer. Finally, it is also recommended to photocopy all important documents and give them to doctors in new property locations.
Education
It could be necessary to reserve school places well in advance as well as pay deposits, and it is essential to know when deadlines for the process are. Some schools insist children are vaccinated before admitting them.
The curriculum can vary between regions and it is important to assess what children are being taught. Much depends on the time spent abroad and the disruption caused moving between different methods of study.
Travel
The journey to a new location also requires careful planning. Will it be necessary to have childcare arranged for the packing and unpacking process? Are language skills up to the necessary level?
Passports must also be in order, even for European travel, utilities and transport also need to be arranged along with new banking facilities -whose processes may vary from those in the UK.
Researching these key areas can help make moving abroad as stress free as possible.
