FMB launches Greener Britain initiative

The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) has launched a campaign to improve the eco-efficiency of property across the UK.
The campaign, Building a Greener Britain, seeks to encourage the construction sector to move towards a greener, more energy efficient environment.
Over the coming months the FMB will be working with Oxford University's Environmental Change Institute, the government and industry representatives to develop a series of practical policy recommendations for implementation, which will help encourage householders to make their homes greener.
"With buildings contributing 47 per cent of the UK's total carbon emissions, the FMB has a key role to play in helping the government achieve its target to cut carbon emissions by 60 per cent by 2050," said Brian Berry, director of external affairs at the FMB.
Construction composes a large percentage of the UK's carbon emissions, with 50 per cent of all consumption resulting from the sector; ten per cent during building and a further 40 per cent during the life of a building.
Furthermore, construction and demolition produce more than 80 million tonnes of waste each year, with around 6 tonnes of materials used annually for every man, woman and child in the UK.
"Over the coming months the FMB is determined the building sector will be ahead of the game by outlining policy recommendations to government and opinion formers to enable builders to play a full and constructive role in building the new greener Britain," continued Mr Berry.
The FMB is committed to a safe, sustainable and practical construction industry. Most importantly the FMB is committed to ensuring that government objectives for sustainability are practical," he added.
