The best value properties in the country are scattered across the east and south-east of the country, new research reveals.
Halifax's Quality of Life Index finds the best value property location for flats is Buckinghamshire and Suffolk is the best place to buy a terraced home.
For semi-detached properties Sleaford in Lincolnshire is rated best value according to the bank's research.
Along with house prices, the study rated the locations according to employment rate and average salary, the type of housing and the percentage of owner occupation, traffic and burglary levels, the weather, the healthiness of the residents and whether the area has high achieving schools.
"There are still some bargains to be had for first-time buyers and home-movers. Chesham is the best value for money location in the country for flats, followed by Stowmarket for terraced properties," commented Martin Ellis, Halifax chief economist.
As well as offering the best value flats for their price and quality of life, Chesham is ranked the sixth best place to live in the country. Other locations with cheap flats (below £150,000 on average) rated highly for their quality of life were Basingstoke, Bracknell and Aylesbury.
However, on price alone the report finds Belshill in Scotland is the most affordable town, with flat prices of £64,203 on average.
For terraces, Stowmarket's average price of £133,331 plus high quality of life rating made it the best value for terraced properties, followed by Diss in Norfolk and Melksham in Wiltshire.
Buyers looking for larger properties get the best value for money out of Sleaford in Lincolnshire, rated the 129th best place to live out of 549 locations in the country, with an average price of £139,791. However, for value alone, Peterlee in the north's average price of £103,093 for semis makes it the cheapest place to buy a larger home.
