Home security a priority in the heat

The summer months see homeowners' possessions exposed to more risk than ever, a new report has found.
As temperatures soar, Britons traditionally react by opening windows and doors to let the air circulate - but these practices also provide opportunities for burglars.
Halifax Home Insurance reveals today that over the summer months there is a 21 per cent increase in "unforced burglary claims", as sneak thieves seize their chances to make off with valuables.
Vicky Emmott, senior underwriter for Halifax Home Insurance, commented: "Each summer we see a dramatic increase in the number of unforced entry claims. Burglars can be in and out of a property in minutes, often whilst unsuspecting occupiers are sitting in the garden or watching television in another room."
But these lax security practices could see homeowners counting the cost, as most home insurance policies have a clause that requires policyholders to exercise "reasonable care" over their belongings.
"Unfortunately those that don't keep home security at the forefront of their mind may find that they are not covered for any resulting stolen items," warned Ms Emmott.
Halifax has produced a list of top tips for a secure summer:
- Never leave windows or doors open or unlocked if you are leaving the house and always be aware of any items which may be left on display if you are upstairs or sitting in the garden. If you have an alarm make sure you always turn it on.
- Always use safety latches on windows so they can not be prised open. At night time limit open windows to occupied bedrooms.
- Think out of sight out of mind. Always keep items away from the view of opportunistic thieves - handbags, wallets and car keys left by open doors or windows make rich pickings.
- Check your home insurance policy and make sure items of high value or special interest are named on the policy.
- Join a Neighbourhood Watch scheme.
