Britain's obsessions with home makeover TV shows has added £51 billion to house prices, new research shows.
Hit shows such as Grand Designs, Changing Rooms, Property Ladder and Ground Force have inspired over one in five homeowners to undertake some home improvement, according to a survey by Privilege Home Insurance.
Repainting walls, replacing flooring and installing new bathrooms are among the home improvement projects that have added on average £7,870 to the value of every home in Britain.
But some homeowners have gone even further, with four per cent inspired to install a gym, add a swimming pool or build a tennis court.
"Privilege's research is great new for everyone who loves watching TV home makeover gurus work their magic on the nation's homes," said Ian Parker managing director of Privilege Home Insurance.
"It appears that adding value to your home is a hidden benefit of the changes that people make to their homes because they have been inspired by TV shows."
But the insurer warns homeowners that they should only engage in work that they are confident they can complete, and to avoid damaging their property should call in the professionals if they are in any doubt.
