Dubai Torch is world's tallest residential tower

Dubai has claimed another world record with the completion of The Torch, the world's tallest residential tower.
Developer Select Group has revealed that the tower, in Dubai Marina, is 348 metres tall and has 676 apartments spread over 86 floors.
Standing 25 metres taller than Australia's Q1 Tower, which was the former world record holder, the AED665 million (£111 million) apartment block offers residents a sauna, gym, shops and eight floors of parking. The apartments – which have reportedly already sold out – come with one, two or three bedrooms, and offer balconies with views of the sea, the Palm Jumeirah and Dubai Marina.
Rahail Aslam, CEO of Select Group, said: "This is a milestone for the Group and we are proud to be contributing to the list of global firsts Dubai has achieved over the years.
"The Torch... is a testimony to Select Group's continuing commitment to Dubai and the potential of its property sector as it gradually emerges from the shadows of the global financial crisis."
The Torch is a mere baby compared to Dubai's Burj Khalifa, which is the world's tallest building at 828 metres. But despite the fact that the Burj Khalifa contains apartments, it doesn’t qualify for inclusion in the world's tallest residential building list because it also features commercial space and a hotel (the industry rule of thumb is that to qualify, buildings must be at least 90 per cent residential).
Select Group is now working on Bay Central, another Dubai Marina project which will comprise two residential towers due for completion later this year and a five-star hotel scheduled to open in 2013, and Botanica, a 41-storey building which will feature a botanical garden on the 27th floor.
