A Place in the Sun - career moves abroad
Tuesday, 31 March 2009 3:37 PM
A Place in the Sun Live will take place this weekend at Earls Court in London, and ahead of the event the organisers have revealed the careers most in demand in five top long-haul destinations.
The event, taking place from April 3rd to 5th, runs off the back of the popular channel four television series of the same name, and will be presented by the TV trio Amanda Lamb, Jasmine Harman and Jonnie Irwin.
The exhibition will feature 1,000s of overseas properties for sale, by over 200 exhibitors from more than 40 countries worldwide.
With many of us currently thinking of a career change, A Place in the Sun has put together the following list of places abroad seeking British workers:
New Zealand
In demand: Teachers
Where can I work? British teachers are generally welcomed anywhere in New Zealand, from the city centres to the smallest country villages.
Buying a house: The NZ housing market is around four to six months behind the UK, with prices tumbling.
South Africa
In demand: Engineers - biomedical, clinical, structural, mining, electrical, aircraft, electrical, industrial, mechanical
Where can I work? The industrial centres and the coal- and gold-mining areas around Johannesburg. There are high-tech industries starting up in the Durban area too, while the Cape is always a popular choice for immigrants.
Buying a house: The house price boom is finally over in South Africa, but you can still knock a zero off the price of a house compared to its UK equivalent.
Canada
In demand: Construction workers and tradesmen, including plumbers, electricians, carpenters and plasterers
Where can I work? The west coast, where construction workers leaving to work in the oil industry have generated a chronic shortage.
Buying a house: Prices have fallen steeply in Canada as the country has been dragged into recession by the US, but the housing market is generally having a soft landing.
Australia
In demand: Nurses
Where can I work? Everywhere, but especially Queensland and Western Australia.
Buying a house: Recent falls in house prices following the economic downturn are increasing affordability.
USA
In demand: Manufacturing technologists, scientists and engineers
Where can I work? Everywhere, but especially the 'Rust Belt' (aka the Manufacturing Belt), which stretches from New York to Detroit, and California too.
Buying a house: Outside California and Manhattan, American property prices are surprisingly reasonable, especially at the moment.
