Security is especially key for single women and divorcees
Security features heavily in the priorities of homebuyers throughout their lives, new research shows.
For eight out of ten single women and six in ten divorcees it is the most important factor when it comes to buying a home, while it is also a key factor for couples with kids and gay couples.
Nightlife is a key priority for seven in ten single men, and over half of gay couples and single women.
But the survey by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) reveals a shift in priorities when couples move in together, with factors such as off-street parking becoming more prominent in their decision on where to buy a house.
The arrival of kids brings about a further shift in priorities with the proximity of schools becoming an issue for over eight in ten parents.
Gardens also rise up the priority list, becoming a key factor for six in ten parents, and security returns to the list – although it is more of a priority for lone parents.
RICS asked 140 chartered surveyor estate agents to name the most important criteria specified by different social groups when looking for a new home.
