Moving house can be an arduous process and there are a whole host of hidden pitfalls to avoid.

Luckily Moveme.com has compiled a useful guide to make the day go as smoothly as possible.

6 - 8 Weeks before the move

A surveyor and solicitor are key at this stage and booking them online could save time and money. Once booked ensure you have the drains at the property checked and the paperwork is in order.

4 - 5 Weeks before you move

Finalise your moving date and book a removals firm. Booking early ensures you get the date you want and could save you money. At this stage you could also begin to pack non-essential items and check your home insurance to ensure you are covered for the move.

3 Weeks before you move

As the day approaches order bubble wrap and packing materials, contact your phone and broadband providers to let them know you are moving and arrange some change of address cards to send out to family and friends.

2 Weeks before you move

Evaluate and choose the best deals for gas and electricity in your new home, inform your bank and mobile phone operator of your plans and arrange to have your children and pets cared for on the day.

1 Week before you move

Notify your existing council of your departure and check to see if you are entitled to a council tax rebate. It is calculated by the day, so you may have paid too much.

On the day

Keep one essential box of utensils, candles and bedding with you and make sure to check round the house one final time after the van is packed.

Follow these steps to make the day as smooth and stress free as possible.
