Borrowers 'do not know their mortgage rate'

Many homeowners are not aware of their mortgage rate, with figures suggesting this is applicable to around 28 per cent of people branded "a gross underestimate".

More than half do not know their interest rate, claimed Ray Boulger, senior technical manager at mortgage advice firm John Charcol

"In general I would say that there is a considerable lack of knowledge about people's specific mortgage products," he commented.

Mr Boulger urged homeowners to be aware of the interest rate they are paying, as well as when their current deal comes to an end, in order to ensure they have the best loan to suit their needs.

"The more notice people take of their various financial products, the more likely it is they are going to know when they have got a good deal and when they should be thinking of switching," he continued.

Figures from the Council of Mortgage Lenders have revealed that gross mortgage lending declined to around £9.1 billion in January - a fall of nearly a third on December.
