High-net-worth individuals often underestimate the value of their gardens when insuring their property, a leading home insurer has suggested.
A new study from specialist home insurer Hiscox reveals that 21 per cent of homeowners have items in their outdoor space they consider valuable, from furniture to plants.
Spending on gardens is set to escalate further as the poll of wealthy homeowners found that over half (53 per cent) were planning new landscaping work and planting over the next six months.
Almost one in ten (eight per cent) of those surveyed are planning on buying new outdoor furniture, while 11 per cent already display sculptures or garden art, 17 per cent own a fountain and 12 per cent store sporting equipment in their garden.
The research also revealed measures homeowners are taking to protect gardens with the most popular being locking items in a shed (64 per cent), followed by outdoor lighting (55 per cent) and high fencing (50 per cent).
Austyn Tusler, insurance expert at Hiscox, said: "When thinking about insurance for the home, it's all too easy to overlook the value of the contents in your garden… Favourite items – a luxury furniture set, exotic plants and sophisticated gardening equipment – can be costly to replace."
