Home owners urged to insulate to cut fuel bills

Home owners are missing out on savings of £110 a year on their fuel bills by failing to improve the energy efficiency of their properties, according to energy saving advice website Thinksulation.com.
The website highlights figures showing that 43 per cent of the 19 million homes in the UK with cavity walls have no cavity wall insulation.
And only 1.4 million owners have taken advantage of a government scheme funded by energy suppliers to install cavity wall insulation over the last three years.
Cavity walls are most common in homes built after 1930 and consist of two layers with a small gap between them. This can be filled with glass mineral wool insulation in less than a day by a professional installer with minimal disruption.
Lynda Sharples from Thinksulation.com said: “Cavity wall insulation can cost between £50 and £250 and homeowners will see a payback in just two years, possibly sooner as the price of fuel continues to rise.”
