Coronation Street house set for eco home makeover

One of Britain's most famous terraced homes, No 1 Coronation Street, is to be given an energy-efficient makeover at the Ideal Home Show 2011.
The Weatherfield property has been home to Ken and Deirdre Barlow for longer than most of us care to remember, but at next month's Ideal Home Show, an exact replica will be kitted out with a complete array of eco-friendly upgrades.
Architect and TV presenter George Clarke is behind the exhibit, which will use before-and-after versions of the familiar dwelling to demonstrate how more than five million similar UK properties could be made more environmentally friendly through a few simple improvements.
Clarke's remodelled Coronation Street home will showcase a range of practical ideas that will not only give Ken and Deirdre's tired old pad a much-needed revamp, but also teach us all a lesson in using an existing space more effectively.
The Restoration Man star commented: "There are over 25 million existing homes across the UK. Many are of a poor environmental standard and wouldn't come anywhere near close to complying with the current building regulations.
"If every UK existing home was given an Ideal Eco Refit, the UK property market would be transformed. Our national carbon footprint would be dramatically reduced along with individual homes' annual energy bills."
The modified home will be upgraded with home insulation, double glazing, solar thermal panels for hot water, PV panels for electricity and an energy-efficient boiler, among other modern technologies.
The Ideal Home Show, London will open its doors for 17 days from March 11-27 2011, at Earls Court. Tickets can be either booked at IdealHomeShow.co.uk or by calling 0844 415 4144 (get your Ideal Home Show discount code here). 50p per ticket goes to the Ideal Homes for Heroes appeal supporting ABF, The Soldiers’ Charity.
