Ground Force

Charlie Dimmock, Ground Force
While Alan Titchmarsh may have departed in 2001, he left behind him an able team of garden experts to continue educating and entertaining the green figured public into 2005.

The Ground Force gang, made up of Tommy Walsh, Charlie Dimmock, Will Shanahan and Kirsty King were called upon to transform gardens around the country, which they did, often as a surprise for one of the homeowners.

With skills ranging from bedding, design and carpentry to creating fixtures, ponds and dazzling flowerbeds in ordinary gardens, the team fronted one of the most successful gardening series of all time.

So successful were they that their skills were not called upon just by normal members of the public – they even worked their magic on Nelson Mandela's garden in South Africa.

Their last garden makeover was outside the British Museum, where they made a garden for Africa, which members of the public could walk around, admiring the natively produced sculptures and natural African plants.

And of course, every show wasn't complete without a glass of champagne and a natter at the end.
