Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

Extreme Makeover: Ty Pennington
For a high-energy, high-concept alternative to the average home makeover show, look no further than Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

Like its cosmetic surgery ancestor, the home edition leaves no expense spared in making people's dreams come true, with each property redevelopment being lavished with a $1 million budget.

A typically brash and over-the-top American production, the high-octane shows are bursting with trans-Atlantic enthusiasm, as the presenters and crew brainstorm and plot to make the original properties virtually unrecognisable.

Designs in the past have gone further than merely creating a recreational space in an outbuilding – there have been basketball courts in garages, a farm and swimming pools in unusual places.

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition doesn't just transform any old home, either. The show picks members of the public who have suffered a dramatic turn of events in their lives, such as the eight children whose parents died within days of each other.

It is presented by chiselled Ty Pennington, who is assisted by a team of 50 workers, who fight against the tight schedule of seven days to complete the ambitious renovations.
