Tricks to remove stains from your carpet

Carpets can prove to be a fantastic addition to the home and by purchasing a plush, new floor covering you can really give a room the finish touch.

However, as you marvel over your fresh new carpet, you may want to bear in mind that it might not always look as good as this - particularly if you have pets and/or young children running about - so you may want to consider how you can remove stains and spills from your floor.

Kids and animals can create havoc on a new carpet, whether it's through muddy feet or spilt drinks, so that a wool mix carpet you may have recently purchased may soon fall victim to stains and unsightly marks.

But there is no need to despair that your carpet will be permanently ruined should your little one spill a fizzy drink on it or mud from your dog's feet is splattered all over your floor. With a little effort, you can soon get your carpet looking as good as new in no time!

However, speed is of the essence and it's important to act quickly to ensure that stains do not become engrained in your carpet, this will only make them more difficult to get rid of.

Of course the substance that is on your carpet will determine how you go about removing it. And if you're looking to get rid of spilt liquids, such as coffee and red wine, you should make certain that you blot them up and do not rub them. In doing the latter, you may only make the problem worse and cause permanent damage to your carpet's fibres.

By using a plain paper towel to soak up as much of the liquid as possible, you should then rinse the damaged area with water and blot it again until it becomes dry, you should find that the stain has disappeared.

For particularly troublesome marks, you may want to use washing up liquid and warm water to help lift out the stains.

If your carpet has fallen victim to spilt solid substances - chocolate cake perhaps - you should vacuum up the debris, before rinsing the area of your carpet with water and blotting dry.

By following such advice you may soon find your carpet looks as good as new once more, allowing you to enjoy your fantastic flooring for many years to come!
